Railroad Heritage Dining and Conference Tables
Posted by Robert Hendrick on Jul 29th 2024
We craft our industrial style dining and conference tables from authentic railroad components. Sections of railroad and boxcars go into all of the furniture we design and build, giving each piece a truly unique character and creating a fine work of art for your home or office.
We’re offering up two new tables with the same design, but with variations that set the two apart from each other – like siblings from the same parents, but with distinctly different physical traits.
We present for your consideration, our Ladder Dining and Ladder Conference Tables.
Ladder Dining and Conference Tables
Our first table features sections of hard maple boxcar flooring. The look of the reclaimed materials is unmistakable.
The tabletop catches the eye first. We craft it from the old boxcar flooring that retains heavy scarring and a rich aged patina with a lot of character. Epoxy-filled holes appear where bolts fastened the one-foot-wide chopping block style sections to the floor. Hand-crafted details appear throughout this work of art.

We select and assemble each piece of lumber. The holes from the original installation follow a general pattern, but deviations are common providing further testament to the handwork that went into the cars when they were built.
The strips of hard maple come together in 12-inch wide tongue and groove panels, and the ends of the tables show off the elaborate contours used to assure the boards fit tightly and accurately.
The base features portions pulled from the ladder found at the end of a boxcar. A favorite spot for moniker writers, the occasional bit of graffiti sneaks into these pieces making each table entirely unique.
The classic grey color originates with livery selected by the Pan Am Railway when they rebranded some of the cars on the fallen flags that became the Pan Am. Owned by a holding company that retained the rights to the old PanAm Airways branding, this line consisted of the old running lines of the Maine Central (MEC) and Boston & Maine (B&M) Railroads in the Northeast corridor of the US.
One end features a stenciled SIGMA WS insignia with 2-06 signifying a February 2006 date. Just above it, a moniker in white paint pen hides tucked beneath the table top. The other end features a crisp clean grey panel free of vandalism.
We added a trestle in the form of a section of jointed rail to the base of this version. It's a simple detail that brings an element of the roadway to the authentic materials of the rolling stock used in the rest of the table.
As with all of our large tables, we craft them clean with a solid top so they can serve as a dining table. We can easily modify either of these to add an AV box with HDMI, and USB ports to turn it into a conference table – buyer’s choice.
Ladder Dining Table #2
Our second iteration in this run features a top crafted from slabbed oak crosstie stock. As with all of our crosstie material, it is authentic, yet our wood is free from creosote. We accomplish this by sourcing new stock from crosstie manufacturers, but utilizing their culls or seconds – ties that they don’t treat for various imperfections.

The rich dark color and strong grain of the oak makes for a classic feel like you find in old world style products. It’s a look that never goes out of style!
The oak top table uses the upper portion of the same ladder where the color has shifted from grey to the familiar bright sky blue so widely associated with the Pan Am brand. One end sports a moniker from Almond Eyes while the other is a clean blue.
Both sections each bear two heavy ladder rungs bolted through the top hat structure common with rail cars. Thick heavy materials show their heritage in the wear, the preserved rust and other nicks and dings that come with a long service life in the industrial world of railroading.
Our Ladder Dining and Conference Tables represent the pinnacle of industrial artistry, blending rich history with meticulous craftsmanship. Whether you choose the grey-themed table with its Pan Am Railway heritage or the sky blue variant featuring genuine railroad monikers, you're acquiring not just a piece of furniture, but a piece of history reimagined for modern use. Perfect for both dining and conference settings, these tables are versatile, durable, and undeniably distinctive, ensuring that they will be cherished centerpieces in any home or office.
