Shuffleboard: A Game for the Ages Meets the Railroad

Shuffleboard: A Game for the Ages Meets the Railroad

Posted by Sally Hendrick on Sep 10th 2024

Shuffleboard has a rich history dating back to 15th century England. Originally, it was played by sliding coins down a table, a game known as “shove groat” or "shovel-penny". It became popular among both the young and old, and even found its way into the American colonies, where it was played in taverns.

The game evolved over time, and by the early 20th century, deck shuffleboard became a popular pastime on cruise ships. In 1913, Robert Ball brought the game ashore to Daytona Beach, Florida, where it quickly gained popularity. The St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club, established in 1924, played a significant role in formalizing the game and its rules.

Shuffleboard Tournaments Throughout the USA

Shuffleboard remains a beloved game due to its low physical demands and strategic depth. Tournaments are held regularly across the United States and internationally. Some of the better known ones are the USA National Association Tournaments, Table Shuffleboard Association Events, and Scoreholio Tournaments.

These organized events add a competitive yet friendly aspect to the game, allowing players to engage with more experienced members of the community.
